Muddy Glock 35
An overview with pictures

I was attending a CCW class and the students were talking about what gun they planned to carry. A some point a student suggested his CCW would not get dirty so if it worked or not with dirt and mud on it didn't matter to him.

I have a different point of view on this subject. I figure we never know what might happen and we don't always get to choose when and where a situation might happen where we are required to use our sidearm.

So in order to prove my choice of a Glock as a CCW pistol, I offered to drop my Glock in the mud we were standing in, and I was confident it would still work no matter what. Of course the Glock worked fine, but it took a while to get back to town for a good cleaning. Here is what it looked like after just a quick cleaning on the mountain after being dropped in wet mud. This was no serious challenge to the Glock (or most any modern CCW pistol) but none of the students was willing to drop their guns to see if they would work too..

This is not disrespect for my sidearm, I have great respect for it. I am confident my Glocks will work when / if I ever need them to because I am willing, and have tested them like this. Can your CCW gun work with some mud on it? Have you ever tested it?

This is not as muddy as it was when we tested it. One thing that did happen was the lens to the weapon light (Surefire X200) was caked with mud almost immediately, and I didn't realize it right away.

Things the mud changes on a Glock. The serrations in the slide were caked and almost smooth, Using the 'mitten' technique for manipulating the slide is a good thing IMO. The Mag release was caked and almost clogged. If left to dry this would have been a bad thing. Slide lock was covered in mud and stayed down.. not a big deal but worth mentioning, it could be needed if a malfunction clearance was necessary. The weapon light was packed with mud and stayed on in my holster. I might not have noticed this and wasted the battery. Although these could have caused larger problems, nothing stopped the gun from functioning. And most of these issues would have been with dried, caked on mud, not the wet mud.. So a simple cleaning after getting dirty would keep the pistol from getting any serious issues later
